Winter Is for Rest: Why the New Year Should Begin in Spring
The end of the Christmas season has arrived and we are about to welcome in the new year of 2026. When you spend time with your family for the holidays it should leave you feeling refreshed, loved, and recharged. No matter how you enjoy the holidays- in an intimate setting with the family you created, solo, or with friends, you still should feel the feelings of being refreshed and ready to return to the world with new found energy. Us humans can get caught up in our goals, work, or the everyday tasks of being human that we forget that we need to pause, reflect, and most importantly rest. The holidays are our reminders that life is about the interactions from the people around us and refilling each others cup when we have all run low.

In nature, the winter season is perceived as everything “dead.” All the trees are bare, there’s no color or life in your flower beds, and all of the the animals are hibernating or have flown somewhere else for warmer weather. The bugs are even gone. But it is not death we are witnessing, we are witnessing rest. A time to allow your energy to relax after months of hard work of maintaining “life.” Think about it, the plants we all love spend a lot of energy preparing and growing flowers, fruits, and vegetables during their peak season. We remove them from the plants and they continue to produce until their season is over. The cycle continues because it works, and we all equally benefit. (For the most part)

When the Christmas season approaches we are still in the season of Fall. The winter solstice day happens just days before Christmas and if you live in the right area, you may experience a white Christmas. At this point you are more than likely on vacation until after the new year, the kids are home and everyone has a chance to breathe from the demands of their everyday lives. The new year is slowly approaching and suddenly we start to see the gym commercials, planning of vision board parties, and “New Year Goals” is the trending topic on social media platforms. That calmness you were living in is bombarded with the energy of New Year preparations.

We have been conditioned to start working on our goals and implementing those plans as soon as the first week of the new year. The gym is always jam packed the first month of the year, your crushing those goals but suddenly the momentum is starting to fade out after a week or so. You’re back to work and that everyday mundane loop has restarted and the tiny bit of momentum is suddenly evaporated into thin air. The problem is that we thought we were fully recharged and ready but it was indeed only a short charge. We don’t see plants starting to bloom at the new year, they are still in rest mode building up the necessary energy for the spring and summer months.

In the western culture, January 1st is the signal for a fresh start but we should be following the seasons and doing what nature does, which has proven to be successful. Use the winter season to rest and plan for the spring because don’t we all feel like we come back alive at the first sign of warm weather and the plants starting to “wake up?” Our new year should be the spring equinox, which is on March 20th. We should work in seasons that feel good to us. Not every plant peaks in the summer, some have a later bloom. The same goes for fruits and vegetables we love to consume, we can only buy the fruits that are season, we don't bargain with the plants that just what it is. Can you imagine how they would taste if they were forced to bloom out of season? In a way we all are performing out of season, that's why some of us are unhappy with where we are at in life.

When the New Year comes you can still do your small rituals of setting goals and achieving them but don’t fully submerge yourself into them just yet. Start small and manageable and build up to the bigger goals, make a promise that you will reach your goal when you see the first bloom. Maybe plant a flower, and when you see it start to bloom you know you should be approaching the completion of your goal. Small consistent action is better than no action at all. Conserve your energy and focus on keeping your nervous system regulated, because when the spring arrives you will have a lot of work to do maintaining your project. If you nervous system is regulated and your body is relaxed you can take on the world and the challenges that may come when trying to achieve your goals.

It is so important to take your time when starting on a new project or the rebranding your life. You will not have all of the answers in the beginning and that is okay and normal. You are in the phase of observing, learning, and discovering. Don’t aim for perfection, aim to be present in the moment to feel the full experience. Figure out what you like without any external influences. That is what will matter in the end. Don’t be fooled by the society norms that you have been conditioned to follow. You should always do what feels, and resonates, with you the most. At the end of the day you will be the only person that has to live with every single choice you make in your life. Everyone else will go off to do what is best for them. Live for yourself first and everybody else second. My favorite quote is "No one is coming to save you."

The end of the holiday season is not a signal to overwork yourself into your goals. Use it as a period to allow yourself to rest. Don't think you have to goal set before the new year, you can set whenever the time feels right. Plan around the spring equinox (March 20th) and see where your life takes you. It's now time to step out of what we know as normal and try things a different way. If something is not working for you please take the time to figure out something that does, your life depends on it! The only way to live a successful life is to experiment with everything until you find the success that makes you happy. You may feel disoriented and loss in the beginning but if you work through it you will be okay once you reach the light at the end of the tunnel.
This year we will be celebrating the new year at the spring Equinox and we will be documenting the journey along the way with posts, and videos.
