Discovering George Michael Through Wham!
There are only a few artists who can successfully create a timeless Christmas classic, and George Michael is one of them. I stumbled upon this amazing human when I heard the song “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” I heard this song playing in a scene of a kids’ movie, The Emoji Movie. The song was extremely catchy, so went searching up the history. It has good energy, and an overall fun song. It was to my surprise that this song was released in the ’80s by a UK group called Wham! I was definitely intrigued, but I did not fall into a rabbit hole until I heard the song “Last Christmas.” This was not my first time hearing the song, but it was my first time intentionally listening to it.
Discovering George Michael Through Wham!
“Last Christmas” is one of those rare Christmas songs that transcends generations. Decades after its release, it still plays on radios, in stores, and in homes every holiday season. It has become part of the collective emotional memory of Christmas, evoking nostalgia, love, heartbreak, and warmth all at once. Few artists manage to create music that feels both personal and universal, but George Michael accomplished that with ease.
George Michael’s Purpose and Passion for Music
After hours of digging, listening, and watching every video on YouTube about George Michael as an individual, I understood why he is one of the biggest and best-selling artists of all time. He was truly living in his purpose and using all of his multiple talents. The origin story of George further confirmed that we are all here to discover and find our purpose in life. In one interview, he mentioned how he would wait until the sun came up in order to sing and create music. That passion for music carried into his adulthood with his best friend and bandmate, Andrew Ridgeley.
The Friendship That Made Wham! Possible
George stated that without Andrew, there would be no Wham! or George as a solo act. George was shy and lacked confidence, which Andrew made up for in so many ways. If you watch interviews from their younger years, you can see the genuine love they shared. I could visibly see the confidence shining brighter in Andrew than in George, but sometimes we need that friend to help bring it out of us. Their hit single, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” clearly shows how much fun they were having. They were two best friends in a group known around the world, all while getting paid to do what they loved.
Purpose Doesn’t Always Unfold Alone
This dynamic between George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley highlights how purpose doesn’t always unfold alone. Sometimes it requires partnership, balance, and someone who believes in you when you struggle to believe in yourself. Wham! was not just a pop duo; it was a shared vision that allowed both men to thrive during a specific season of their lives.
The Intention Behind the “Last Christmas” Video
After I played “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, I discovered their hit single “Last Christmas,” followed by its cinematic video. When I went on a deep dive into how the video came about, I was impressed by the amount of intention behind it. First, all of the friends featured in the video were real friends of George Michael. He asked them if they wanted to be part of the video because it made more sense to have his actual friends involved, creating a more organic experience. The intention behind that small decision made the video even better.
A Timeless Song That Will Never Fade
In behind-the-scenes interviews, everyone said they had a blast, especially at the dinner party. Andrew ended up getting so drunk that he was intentionally left out of one of the scenes. “Last Christmas” is a timeless song that will stand the test of time, and future generations will continue singing this magical song. Its longevity proves that authenticity, emotion, and intention are what give music its lasting power.
An Amicable Breakup and Two Different Life Paths
Andrew and George ended up having one of the most amicable band breakups in history because they both knew from the start that Wham! was only a temporary passion. It was destined for their younger, fun, carefree, energetic selves. After the disbandment, they remained close friends throughout the years. George reached even greater success as a solo artist, while Andrew was able to explore his hobbies rather than being a slave to a 9-to-5, as he once said in an interview with 60 Minutes. To date, George has sold more than 25 million copies of his Faith album as a solo artist.
George Michael’s Solo Career and Creative Evolution
George Michael’s solo career further cemented his place in music history. His voice, songwriting, and artistic vision matured alongside him, allowing him to explore themes of love, identity, vulnerability, and freedom. He was never afraid to evolve creatively, even when that evolution challenged public expectations.
Fame, Privacy, and Legacy
As George became more famous, he was in the press for quite a bit of controversy. None of it is worth mentioning here because it all had to do with his personal life, which he advocated keeping private. What matters most is that we were able to witness—and for some, experience—a human live and breathe their purpose from beginning to end. If there was one thing George was proud of, it was the musical legacy he would leave behind.
Passing Away on Christmas Day
In a turn of events, George Michael passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2016, at the young age of 53. When I discovered that he had passed away on Christmas, I was in shock. What are the odds that someone as successful as he was, and with one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time, would pass away on that same holiday? In that moment, I felt I received further confirmation that life is not what we were taught, and George Michael’s life is a perfect example of that.
Christmas Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning
His passing on Christmas Day added another layer of symbolism to his legacy. It tied his life story permanently to the holiday season, ensuring that his presence would be felt every year through music, memory, and reflection.
A Predetermined Life and Purpose Blueprint
I believe in the concept that we are all living a predetermined life written by no one other than ourselves. When it comes to discovering our purpose, before incarnating on Earth, we write out what and how we are going to experience our human lives in ways that help evolve our souls. We equip ourselves with the necessary gifts to achieve this and leave clues throughout our lives to guide us to where we are meant to be.
George’s Gifts Were Always Meant to Be Shared
That is exactly what George Michael did. When you see him and then hear his voice, you know he was meant to use the voice he was blessed with, along with his songwriting skills and his ear for melodies that make songs great. He was multifaceted but struggled with one essential thing—confidence. Sometimes, if we know we will need help, we ask a friend. For George, that friend was Andrew.
The Cosmic Connection Between George and Andrew
I imagine they sat together in the spiritual realm and planned how they would meet to achieve their goals. Learning about Wham!’s success, it’s hard to believe it was luck or a coincidence. Once they reunited on Earth, success was inevitable. Finding each other was the hardest part. They both had what the other needed, and as long as they stayed together, everything worked out. Even the breakup was part of the plan, because Andrew knew George was meant to be bigger than Wham!—he just needed a little help along the way.
George Michael’s Quiet Philanthropy
After George’s death, it was revealed how much he did philanthropically. What made it genuine was that no one knew until he was gone. He intended to help people who truly needed it without broadcasting it to the world. One story shared involved a couple seeking financial assistance for IVF treatment. George saw their situation on television and made an anonymous donation. The recipient later gave birth and discovered years later that George was the one who helped them.
Final Thoughts: A Pure Soul and a Lasting Legacy
George was a true angel in human form, despite battling his own internal turmoil. Beyond leaving behind some of the greatest songs of all time, George left a legacy that overshadows any shortcomings he had while on Earth. Through his care and generosity, it is clear that George Michael was one of the purest souls to walk this planet. I am grateful that George stayed the course of pursuing his purpose, because now we have one more example of how to win the wonderful game we call life.
