This creative journey has been a journey for sure. There is no other word to describe it because there’s always something new to discover, figure out, be inspired by, or be frustrated with. I’m learning that sitting stagnant at my desk will never be the place where a creative idea is gently placed into my thoughts.
I have to be moving.
I have to be experiencing.
I have to be living.
I have to be doing something.
Trying to find your way down a path that is only lit when the idea is finished is the most challenging thing I have ever experienced. It feels like when I have written, uploaded, or finished editing a photograph everything goes blank. t’s dark again, and I can’t see where to step next. So sometimes I just wander down that dark path until I see a flicker of light guiding me in its direction.
In real life, that quick flash of light is a quote from a magazine, a line from a book, a sentence someone said, or me driving down the highway.
I have to be moving.
The desk-my desk- is a space where I manifest the thought into my reality. Share it with the world hoping that it turns into a spark that lights a path on someone else’s journey. This is how we move the world back toward the light.
One spark at a time.
One desk at a time.
One idea at a time.
One physical manifestation at a time.
All of those “one at a time’s” will accumulate into something so beautiful that future generations will use them as a guide to help them through life’s next reset and restore balance. When we reflect on the words and visuals left behind by our ancestors, one thing becomes clear: life has a way of repeating itself. When we don’t learn our lessons, they continue repeating until we finally do.
The thing that I need to work on is capturing. I have so many ideas because at this stage of my life I am always moving, working, experiencing, living, and doing something with my almost 5 year old. She is the reason my inner child has reemerged, sometimes it feels like she’s the physical manifestation of my inner child.
Back to capturing.
I’ve been working on systems that help me capture and organize the never ending ideas that are gently placed in my mind. With complex ideas I have to have simple systems and so far, the Apple ecosystem is scratching that itch for me. Once I stick with this capturing system, I’ll write about it. But first, it needs to make it past the 30-day mark so I know the habit has actually formed.
A simplified version of what I am doing in four steps. I am working on different templates to get myself organized so this is very vague. The Virgo in me will figure it out sooner rather than later.
- Idea.
- Notes app.
- Pondering.
- Article, video, or photograph.
If I had to write a note to my past self so she does not waste anytime I would say don’t get caught up in the process or the tools. Just write and capture it all. Dump it all in your notebook, notes app, word doc, and work on organization later. Start making it a habit to turn the idea into a physical manifestation early. That will build your confidence faster than any productivity system ever will.
So, to circle back to your desk… Let us now categorize that as a tool, a necessary tool on your journey but don’t think you need it to start. All you need is your mind, audacity, and a lot of curiosity. With good intentions, everything else will work itself out.
When it’s time to curate your desk working space, use the same intention you used to create your art to curate your desk. Let every piece that sits on your desk have a purpose or a story behind why you chose it. Those items become a source of inspiration and good energy that keeps you aligned with your creativity.
No clutter, just purposeful trinkets, and the necessary supplies to create.
We also can’t forget a small lamp for the days you need soft lighting to set the tone for the evening.
Maybe add a candle too.
Always remember, Your desk is an extension of your creativity and is just one of the building blocks you need for a creative future.
