There are so many ways to release the internal thoughts that keep you up late at night. Technology has given us endless options—many of which come with a cost or subscription. Digital journaling has become the go-to simply because everyone has a device. Physical journaling with a pen is still the standard for some, because there’s a certain kind of magic that happens when you physically write things down.
Another form that isn’t talked about nearly as much is audio journaling.
What is Audio Journaling?
Audio journaling is the practice of recording your voice—or even a video—while you talk to yourself. Verbal journaling creates an audible release that captures unfiltered thoughts in real time. I started audio journaling using the Voice Memos app (the free version from Apple), and it has been life-changing. Most of my audio journals are recorded during my morning commute, when everything is calm and quiet. When you audio journal, you’re documenting your inner dialogue in real time for future reflection—while also honoring your inner voice.
Why Audio Journaling Feels More Effortless Than Writing
Being able to journal effortlessly without writing has been a game changer for both my personal life and my career. All of my quick thoughts and ideas go into my Voice Memos app, organized into folders. I then set a reminder to listen to my audio notes at the end of the week so I can properly process, develop, or brainstorm ideas. As a writer, my mind is constantly moving—thinking about new projects or trying to solve problems.
Audio Journaling as a Form of Intuitive Journaling
When I’m audio journaling, I often speak as if I’m talking to myself as a separate person. When it’s time to go back and listen to my ramblings, it feels surprisingly real—almost as if I’m receiving encouragement from a friend. This method could also be described as intuitive journaling.
Hearing your own voice may feel strange at first, but if you stick with the process, it becomes something you can genuinely fall back in love with. When your brain—or subconscious—hears your own voice, things begin to feel more real. It helps you align more clearly with whatever it is you’re desiring.
There are many ways to practice audio journaling. Some digital journaling platforms include audio features, but those often come at a cost. If you have an iPhone, Apple already offers a free option that’s likely installed on your device. I use folders in my Voice Memos app to keep everything organized and easily accessible: one folder for personal life reflections, one for CEO thoughts, and another for our second YouTube channel (coming soon).
There may be better recording apps out there, but if you’re looking for simplicity and something that costs $0, the Voice Memos app does the job. Sometimes we need reminders that everything doesn’t need to be purchased or complicated. When things are simplified, we create space and conserve energy for what truly deserves our full attention.
How to Start for Free
So how do you start audio journaling? If you have an iphone; search for the voice memo app. Set up your folders if you prefer organization and then hit record! After you have recorded your memo make sure to title it so you will know what the audio is about. It’s a very simple process and a healthy release if you have no one to talk too. If you still want to write in your physical journal, maybe you can dive deeper on certain points from your audio. Either way, audio journaling is a simple tool that can be added into everyone’s daily activities!
